Prime Minister officially launches the Scanning & Archive Unit

Today was a historic occasion for the Department of Lands and Physical Planning, with the Opening of the New Scanning and Archiving Centre. I thank Prime Minister Peter O'Neill for accepting the invitation to officially open this new centre. Thanks must also be extended to National Planning and Monitoring Minister Richard Maru and Department Secretary for their presence to witness the occasion.

The New Centre is the outcome of National Government funding support and testament of its commitment to better work place mechanisms to ensure efficient, effective and transparent public service delivery. While our initial efforts unfortunately had to start with the huge task of cleaning up the Department as opposed to immediate implementation, the new centre is a step forward for the future security of all Department records.

The task at hand against corrupt and greedy individuals and syndicates is far from over, however our efforts to change perceptions and instill faith in our processes must continue. Our work in very close consultation with a/Secretary Oswald Tolopa, Senior Department Management and key officers in the last six (6) months has ensured that we have done and achieved more, than the Department has ever delivered in years.

The Records and Archives Room was purposely built for storage of all titles and records, including land titles, title files, surveys and all other documentation. The development of the New Technology at the Centre will ensure that the problems of file duplication and theft or displacement becomes a thing of past. Every single document on every single land or title file will be individually scanned, electronically saved and stored safe and secure.

This process of scanning and data entry will be undertaken by a team of trained and qualified young men and women under the supervision of senior and specialist managers, over the next two(2) years. I thank Minister Maru and Planning Secretary once again for initially seeing the importance of this technology and centre to ensure funding commitment, Prime Minister O'Neill and National Government for the direction and guidance.

While we celebrate one milestone achieved, our ultimate task of bringing total change to the Department remains at hand
